Introducing Buddhism by Classifying Teachings
Shores of Zen
A 6-part class series from Fall 2015 at Green Gulch Farm.
What does Buddhism teach, and how have these teachings evolved over time? What are the characteristics of the major streams of thought in the tradition - like Abhidharma, Madhyamaka, Yogacara, Tathagatagarbha, and Zen - and how do they fit together?  This class will introduce and explore these diverse (and sometimes contradictory) aspects of the Buddhadharma by using the same tool the early Chinese Buddhists used:  "classification of teachings" (panjiao).  Developed by ancestors like Zhiyi (538-597) and Zongmi (780-841) to make sense of the complex and confusing tradition they inherited, these systems put the jumble of Buddhist doctrines, scriptures, and schools into a few clear and accessible categories, and can help us still today to understand the tradition.
